Biography
Disney has launched many a career, but never one quite like this. Born and raised in Virginia, Asher Book was just six when he landed the role of tiny teacup “Chip” in the Broadway production of “Beauty and the Beast.” Though he had taken piano lessons and often sang around the house, it was still a shock when he found out he got the part, especially up against precocious prodigies who had been preparing for mouse ears their entire life. “Every other kid in the room had been doing this since they were born and came to the audition wearing tuxedoes,” Book recalls. “I was wearing jean shorts, was missing two teeth and sang “Heigh-Ho” as my audition song.”
Now all grown up at 20, Book is singing a different tune as the lead singer of pop group V Factory and star of the latest re-imagining of the Oscar-winning hit Fame. As Marco, a new character introduced for the remake, Book plays a hard-headed tough-guy the voice of an angel. In other words, he’s still belting out the showstoppers, but hardly the fluff of that other movie starring Disney grads.
“It’s not like High School Musical where we’re walking down the hallway singing,” Book says with a laugh. “We’re not trying to make it so bubblegum.”
With a work ethic honed from years on the stage and a mature understanding of what is often a perilous industry, Book seems destined to avoid the career pitfalls that have claimed so many young actors before him. If it were up to him, Book would model his career after Jim Carrey or Hugh Jackman (“I’d love to do a
huge blockbuster movie and then do a Broadway play,” he says), but for now, the budding star only has one thing on his mind: “I’m going to Vegas for my 21st birthday,” he says, smiling. “That should be fun.”
